SUMMER Yes Really

Permaculture “Herb Spiral”

Summer is really here at least on the calendar. It has been a sad but perfect spring as I push myself to finish my projects, shopping, digging, planting and then as if timed perfectly the rains arrive and do the watering for me.

I tore the pretty patio out last year man even with a machine it was hard with a machine and this fat old age lady at the helm and filled bucket after bucket with bricks and concrete and dumped them out of the way. Along came spring this year and the thought of snakes entered my mind as I looked at that heap, nope don’t like snakes so time to do something.

I saw a piece on Permaculture on Facebook yes that damn time sapping thing many are now lost without. Well I use it for the right things for me anyway. Photos, Art and keeping in touch with our other garden clubs and all their happenings. I keep in touch with friends near and far as well as a few family members and some I met on there how exciting just as I was running out of loved ones in come new.

So back to this garden above, it is called a Herb Spiral that I made in 4 hours with that pile and my Deere. I then filled it with super soil and organic compost and let it sit for just about a month to let it settle as the directions I read said to. Then came the plant sales by other garden clubs and I went in search of some lovely items to grow for my kitchen needs. As you can see in a photo I took a week ago they are healthy now to get me back in the mode of eating right. I lost 20 pounds that month I worked the gardens and seem to have found half of it back as sadness I never thought would feel like this really kicked me hard.

Raised beds new and old now are filled with all kind of yummy veggies just needing SUNSHINE

Raised beds are the only way to home garden.

My life is so not what it has been the last 12+ years with JT now gone but I can not think about raising any more animals so the wildlife and Watercolors will have to someday fill the void though I swear this is so hard and those of you who have shared a life of constant companionship with a pet know all too well, others who haven’t will never get it.

Signing off for now I should go pick some greens and peas and begin my diet in earnest once again.

Before the Snow Flies

So much to do as fall is upon us with the winter season fast on it’s heels, weather wise anyways.

My flock of visiting Juncos have arrived which is a sure sign of snow season getting closer and closer and our northern neighbors have already received theirs.  Soon I will be able to hang up bird feeders without constant worry about the neighborhood bears wanting in on the action as well.  We now have a resident Bobcat not sure if it is male or female but I will keep the camera charged and ready for its appearance.

I have been teaching Watercolor classes I know can you believe it 🙂 I have so much fun doing the classes as I take all I struggled with being mostly self taught and let the watercolor take center stage as it should. No bells and whistles just letting it mix and mingle until it speaks to each students heart.  It is about fun and joy they can find enough to stress about as can you and I.

I had the first of my two craft fairs and it was very successful and the Boy Scout troop made some much needed cash.  I sold signed and numbered Giclee prints and lots of cards mom must be watching over me as we come up to the second anniversary of her death. The holidays are hard having no family left to speak of but I know I am not alone.

I promised some photos of what I have been doing to get my property ready to open it up for Art Shows and Classes as well as Plein Air gatherings.

Here are a few before and after shots as I just rented a machine to cut down all the brush so I can begin to put down paths of wood chips for visitors to follow down to the river banks and out into the forest though flowers will also be available with all my new additions this past spring.

So though it looks messy I can finally walk around without being covered with ticks from all that brush and I now have more land to fix and make suitable for growing old and others enjoying one thing I am excited about is friends have offered to build me a ranch home 2 Bedrooms brand new so I can knockdown my old home I no longer want to climb up on the roof to clean 🙂 I am blessed.

I will also add a new roof to the barn/studio and a new front glass door to let the sunshine stream in to the work tables. Not sure where to go to find the perfect door that will sit behind the sliding barn door but so happy for GOOGLE 🙂  I will paint it in the spring I was hoping my son would put an artistic scene on it but not sure where he is and what he is up to these days just hope he is also happy.

Flooding continues to be a problem here but I have folks working on that as I update my blog first make them aware then demand change 🙂 stay tuned!

Happy Thanksgiving to all my US friends and safe holidays to the rest of you from so far away.

Knee Elevated Ice On

We have so many 2 and 4 legged visitors to watch what is beginning to occur slowly but surely here. Arbor Day says my 17 specimens should arrive next week 🙂 and I am making the rest of my raised vegetable beds on Mother’s Day.   I was going to ride down to Bourne MA where my parents were laid to rest at the Veterans Cemetery on Cape Cod but I know both of them would prefer I continue with my vision and to smile, they liked to see me smile.  Happy Mother’s Day to all you Mom’s. Miss you Mom xo
